Going out in Syracuse can be a hit or miss proposition, depending on the night, the weather, if there’s a game on, or who’s in town. But there are some places that are always guaranteed to be fun, full of people you want to meet, and have great entertainment. And in Syracuse, you can always count on Fat Freddy’s Café in Mattydale. There’s something going on every night of the week, and Freddy’s is always full of friendly people. The tropical getaway theme is perfect for our long winters, just the thing to make you forget the snow piling up outside!

Monday night at Freddy’s is Acoustic Open Mic night with TJ Sacco at 8 pm, so get your instruments in tune and start playing! Tuesday brings out the brainiacs for Trivia Night at 7 pm, while Wednesdays find the secret singers among us showing their stuff with Karaoke with Linda. Thursday is Blues night with live bands starting at 8 pm, Friday winds up the work week with acoustic music in the bar for happy hour, followed by another great band on the main stage. Saturday is party night, with live country music from the best bands in central New York. Dart whizzes gather Tuesday for the steel tip league, with plastic tip matches on Wednesday.

The big news at Freddy’s is the scrumptious new menu. Freddy’s famous wings, available in 20 flavors, are the hotteest ticket in town. Fresh jumbo wings are available in the usual mild, medium, hot and atomic, but then the fun starts. You can feast on teriyaki, Bubba’s barbeque, yellow barbeque, yummy garlic, hot and garlic, our own SU Orangemen wings, jamaican jerk, voodoo (jerk with a twist!), mojito with Dinosaur’s mojito sauce (my favorite!), honey mustard, Texas holdum (hot and BBQ!), Smarty Jones bourbon BBQ, Asian plum, and the delectable Red, White and Blue, a mouthwatering combination of blue cheese and red hot sauce.

The tempting menu continues with delicious goodies straight from the kitchen, with hand-patted ‘Back in the Day’ burgers just like you remember, from a no-frills basic burger, to the hog & cheddar with bacon, cheddar & barbeque sauce, Fat Freddy’s burger with mushrooms, cheddar and steak seasoning, a buffalo blue, Italian parm burger, a mango burger straight from the islands, a Hawaiian burger with sweet grilled pineapple, and a spicy cajun concoction that will leave you wanting more! And you can wash it all down with Freddy’s fruity sangria, the perfect complement to great food. The recipe is Freddy’s secret, so you can only get it here!

Freddy’s working hard preparing hot homemade soups and chili, slow roasted roast beef, amazing Philly steak sandwiches, succulent marinated chicken, the tastiest pizzas with tons of toppings or a savory garlic pie, åSaturday Night Live’ Cheeseburger Cheeseburger pizza, and giant loaded nachos almost too good to eat! If there’s still room in the tummy, you can order munchies like beer battered onion rings, chicken tenders, spinach dip, fresh cut fries, mozzarella sticks and jalapeno poppers, and golden fried coconut shrimp with mango dipping sauce. Indescribable! You have to save space for Deb’s secret recipe cole slaw, baked beans like Mom used to make, specially made macaroni salad, and Freddy’s own cucumber and tomato salad. Don’t miss the annual Christmas season customer appreciation party, set for the Saturday before Christmas, from 4 pm til everyone wears out. There’s a giant buffet of Freddy’s homemade specialties, and TJ Sacco and Electric Rodeo play at 8 pm. Escape from shopping and stressing, and get to Freddy’s! And to round out the holiday season, Freddy’s is your spot for New Year’s Eve celebrating. The party starts at 9 pm, with the New State Street Band featuring Tom Razzano, Chuck Sgroi, John LaTocha, and Scott Trudell. Admission is only $10, and includes hors d’oeuvres, hats and noisemakers, and a sparkling champagne toast at midnight to ring in the new year.

Fat Freddy’s Café is located at 2810 Lemoyne Ave, right at the beginning of Mattydale and off Route 11. The kitchen opens for lunch every day at 11 am and serves til midnight, and the bar is open til 2 am daily. Call 455-8063 for information on upcoming entertainment and events, or check them out on the web, www.fatfreddyscafe.com. Call Freddy or any of the great staff at Freddy’s to book your party, arrange for catering, or plan your next night out! Have a happy and safe holiday season, see you next year!
