Monirae's
by Jolene Carr

Monirae’s is truly a jack-of-all-trades kind of joint that keeps its visitors guessing.

The main bar area gives a let-your-hair-down kind of vibe where you wouldn’t find peanut shells on the floor. It was hard not to feel right at home once you walk in to find a quieter, casually-dressed crowd sitting on the comfy stools and watching a big-screen behind them. Some booth seats offer a place for those who prefer an even more laid-back night-life.

Moving past the large pool table and Touch Tunes by the restrooms, I was surprised to see a group of senior citizens. The banquet area offered a nice family atmosphere with little munchies, but where was the band going to be? Within 10 minutes or so, tables and chairs were moved, lights were dimmed and my attention shifted to a small stage in the corner.

The area that had been hosting a 50th wedding anniversary party was now the scene for teenage metalheads who came out to hear Cicero-North Syracuse students’ band Chains of Honor. The father of one of the band members was joking with me that his son was right: if it’s too loud, he’s too old. Other adults seemed to feel this way and took refuge near the front end. When I left the live music for a bit and went through the bar, it was interesting to see the transition between youth enjoying a concert and others discussing sports.

Kathy Meyers, who co-owns Monirae’s with her husband Paul, gave me a tour of the kitchen and dining room. Between Kathy, and the other wait staff who are all family members and close friends, I could tell why it was such a friendly environment.

The dining space features the same cozy surroundings as the main bar with earthy tones, wooden booths and cheery wall hangings. Dining in for lunch and dinner is offered each day, as well as deliveries and take-outs. The menu consists of specialties named for family, like King Cameron’s Delmonico Steak and Mushrooms. A guarantee of large portions and strictly homemade recipes, like French Onion soup, made me want to return for a meal sometime.

Later in the night, Aerosmith cover band Mama Kin took the stage. As Aerosmith songs have the ability to make people do, I found myself having fun and singing along with a mixed group of bikers, middle-age couples and conservatively-dressed young adults. A smaller bar was conveniently located in the back so you wouldn’t lose your spot or miss a beat while getting a drink. If you weren’t up front dancing, you were grabbing a beer and a basket of wings.

Monirae’s Pennellville location is a nice break from downtown Syracuse bar hopping without being too far out of the city.

After hearing about past bridal showers, Who-Done-It Murder Mysteries, shows with Benny Mardones and Dr. Dirty and a July 22nd Midget Wrestling event, I couldn’t help but wonder: what Monirae’s will offer next?
