CLUB SCENE:
THE BURGUNDY LOUNGE (June 2005)

by Maryann McKinley

“An object in motion tends to stay in motion.”

Newton’s First Law (part of it, anyway!) has been a part of my driving experience for the last few days, ever since I became the proud owner of a purple disco ball necklace now hanging from my rear view mirror — bringing the laws of physics to life as I drive the curvy roads of central New York. I turn left, it sails out to the right. I slow down; it trails to the rear, slowly returning to center when I stop.

Okay, so I’m cheating a little. It’s actually following the other part of Newton’s First Law, trying to stay in its original position as it swings around on its lilac leash. “An object at rest-” . . . yada, yada, yada. So maybe me and physics aren’t a match made in heaven. The point is, Newton’s taking up space in my head because of that shiny disco ball, and the bit about being constantly in motion also seems a perfect metaphor for the owner of downtown’s newest must-go club. He, too, seems to be constantly moving forward.
Newcomers to the Burgundy Lounge might recognize Jeff Rogers from his days at the now sadly shuttered McGregor’s, and as a favorite bartender at Clark’s Ale House and L’Adour. Jeff is comfortable everywhere from a French bistro to a friendly sports pub, and that quality is what makes him such a perfect host in his own club, and helps makes Burgundy Lounge such fun.
Jeff opened the club on St. Pat’s Parade Day this year, and word-of-mouth has been bringing in the people ever since. Situated on East Fayette Street in the old Rafferty’s location, it’s convenient to other downtown venues, but far enough away to attract a whole different crowd.

I dropped in to check it out on a recent Saturday evening. My timing couldn’t have been better. I expected a small early evening crowd and a nice quiet chat, but instead I chanced upon Jeff’s 30th birthday bash in full swing. Burgundy Lounge has a 70s feel, and this party fit right into the theme.

The big disco ball was blazing in the back room, shimmers of light were racing around the corners, and most of the guests had gotten into the spirit by dressing disco fashion. Jeff appeared resplendent in a John-Travolta-ish white suit, a perfect look for the evening.
I’d been in Rafferty’s a few times, mainly for a Parade Day visit with friends, but Burgundy Lounge has a whole new look. It’s all cleaned up and sparkly, with a retro feel. Comfortable, tall, black naugahyde chairs at the bar and cocktail tables make you feel like the Bee Gees might appear at any moment. The back room has all new tables and is set up for karaoke or dancing, so it’s a perfect place for a fun Friday night. I got to hear a little hometown singing as Jeff’s birthday guests lined up for the chance to be a star.
Ormond Entertainment was running the karaoke system when I was there, with a little blue-lit screen providing the words for the lyrically-challenged to sing along. These songs weren’t all about disco, though. A group of three pretty relaxed guys sang along to “Dead or Alive,” while Anne from Oneida got up and braved the crowd with her rendition of “Me & Bobby McGee.” Like everything else at Burgundy Lounge, this was a friendly crowd, and Anne got nice applause when she finished.

Everything looked like lots of fun, but I needed more information. So I kidnapped Jeff from his birthday merrymaking for just a few minutes to get some details. He explained that he wanted to create an atmosphere where people can relax and have fun, but where he provides some entertainment to keep things moving. Patrons can sit at a table in the bar and just chat if they prefer, but if his customers are in the mood for something a little more active, there’s plenty going on. Happy hour: Monday through Friday, from 4 to 7, with drink specials for all. $2 well drinks, $2 bottles and Labatt drafts let you head home with a few dollars still in your pocket.
Jeff has a list of wine choices, 160 liquors, and 60 different bottled beers. You’ll find your favorites, like Brooklyn Lager, Blue Moon, Anchor Steam, Yuenling, and Wicked Ale, to name just a few. There’s a martini menu with tasty offerings like “The Hustle,” “Funkytown Martini,” and the soon-to-be famous Burgundy Lounge Martini, a concoction of Big Apple Rum, cranberry and lemon-lime. It’s a keeper!

Tuesday is Industry Night, with specials for the professional restaurant crowd, and for the rest of us. Wednesday offers Flip Night all the time and Party after the Plaza during the summer. Thursday is Ladies Night with drink specials for the girls, and Karaoke Krew from 9:30 to 1:30. Friday has the best happy hour around, with a cool professional crowd, and from the word on the street, lots and lots of babes. Later in the evening it’s Flashback Friday, with music from the 70s, 80s and 90s for dancing.

The weekend continues with “Saturday Night Fever” to keep the fun going. If that’s not enough, there’s pool, darts and games. Even if you hide from the spotlight, there’s plenty to do!

Visit Burgundy Lounge at 318 East Fayette Street, just two blocks over from Hanover Square, and four blocks from Armory. Parking is no problem, with a large free lot available after 5 PM right behind the building. Burgundy Lounge is open every day except Sunday (until football season starts, of course!). The kitchen will be opening in the next few weeks for lunch and more. Coming soon: guest bartenders! Call 422-9292, or check out the website for upcoming events at www.theburgundylounge.com.
There’s always a party going on!
