So, it’s a beautiful summer afternoon in Central New York and you feel like going for a nice little drive with the windows or the top down. Now the question is, where should you go?
Ladies and gentlemen, look for further than Devaney’s Riverside Grill, conveniently located at 9347 Stickle Road in Weedsport. Only ½ mile north of Thruway Exit 40 in Weedsport, the location is snuggled right on the Seneca River and could not be easier to find. The scenic view of the river, coupled with the incredible landscaping (hundreds of flowers hand planted by owner Cindy) cozy outdoor seating and even fountains makes this a perfect place to spend a wonderful evening. In just one trip, I promise you will get hooked on Devaney’s Riverside Grill.
Aside from the beautiful location, what really sets Devaney’s apart from the rest is the food! Almost the entire menu is actually homemade at Devaney’s including the salads (potato and pasta) on the salad bar, the soup, the bread and butter, dressings, batters and sauces as well as many of the desserts. You really can taste the love that is mixed into every bite at this restaurant. Devaney’s is also an ideal stop if you want a real meal for your money. The portions of homemade goodness that they proudly serve here are incredible and the prices are extremely reasonable. Devaney’s boasts an all you can eat salad bar with all the fresh fixings for a perfect salad, homemade soup and (a real treat) different flavored homemade bread each night that is perfectly topped with their homemade butter. On the night we were there the specials were a full rack of ribs, a 12 oz Delmonico that was “to die for” (according to our waitress Sandi who has been at Denvaney’s for seven years) and grilled chicken topped with grilled shrimp and covered in a Florentine cream sauce.
My friend Margaret and I went to Devaney’s on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. The drive was pleasant and a lot shorter than we had expected. When we stepped into the parking lot we immediately noticed the scenic riverfront view. We went inside and were quickly seated and then met Sandi, our waitress. Sandi read us the specials and once she said that the Delmonico ($13.95) was “to die for,” Margaret was sold. And when Sandi added they had homemade garlic mashed potatoes Margaret was in heaven!
I took a look at the menu and decided to try the fried seafood platter (Haddock-Shrimp and Scallops) with a side of homemade garlic mashed ($15.95). We also decided to start with the Bold’n’Spicy Garlic Bread, which was toasted garlic bread smothered in fresh diced jalapenos, tomatoes and mozzarella cheese which was served with side of their signature marinara ($3.95).
As mentioned earlier, all entrees at Devaney’s include the fresh salad and soup bar. The soup of the day was Mexican tortilla soup and the bread was homemade banana bread and strawberry butter. The homemade bread and butter combination tasted like dessert even before our appetizer came! Our entrees arrived in huge portions with everything cooked to perfection. The batter on my fried seafood platter was light and crispy and you could definitely taste the freshness of the seafood. Margaret said (and I agreed) that these were the best garlic mashed potatoes she had ever tasted, hands down. Although we didn’t have room for dessert, Devaney’s offers chocolate peanut butter pie, Snickers pie, pecan pie and Apple caramel cheesecake. Honestly, if I said the food was fantastic, it would be an understatement, you are just going to have to try it for yourself!
And if you’re looking for some entertainment (along with a great meal) Devaney’s is your ideal summer venue. Come down for a Thursday Jambake outside on the river; the Tiki bar opens at 5, they start serving food at 5:30, and the live music starts at 6! Or you can try out Rockin’ on the River on Fridays. The Tiki bar opens at 4:30 and the music starts at 7:30. Both of these events run all summer long and you can check out who’s playing at http://devaneysriverside.com, or by calling Devaney’s at (315) 834-6352.
